![]() 1999 - MIDNIGHT PEOPLE 7" (release the bats!/promenade/lady godiva operations) "The Swedish label Release The Bats is doing great. For a time now they have been releasing the most obscure bands in the field of post-punk and related styles. This 7" is the debut by the new Swedish band 1999 and the best release from the label until now. 1999 plays rocking dark post-punk. Their music is more punk than Bauhaus and more gothic than Au Pairs. Both the A-side and the B-side are excellent. 'Midnight People' (the A-side) is an instant hit (and a modern classic in the genre?) or at least should become an underground hit. 'Legends' (the B-side) is somewhat less catchy but still very suitable for the alternative dancefloor. This band is a revelation for everyone who thought post-punk was a dead and forgotten genre. 1999 plays post-punk in its pure form but it’s totally here and now." review from funprox.com (40kr/€4.50)

And thank god for that, cause these 909 loyalists are ubiquitous dudes, road-tripping to any two-bit post-punk community center that will let them plug in and play their claustrophobic angle jams. ![]() ALVARS ORKESTER - INTERFERENCE CD (ash international) "Analogue sound experiments from old Sweden 1987-2006+. This album is the first release in what will be the 13th anniversary since the foundation of Ash International. 'Interference' by Alvars Orkester was edited by Mike Harding and Philip Marshall, who here also designs his first CD for the label. 'Interference' consists of analogue drones, interspersed with hardcore electronics, hair-raising voices and spine-chilling ambience. Alvars Orkester, was formed in 1987 in Johannishus, a small village in the south-east of Sweden by a group of young boys interested in the mysteries of psychic sickness, mental institutions, the industrial music culture and the power of sound. For the first very creative years, Alvars was very active within the independent cassette culture scene releasing their stuff (that quite soon drifted from the industrialism inspired by Test Dept, TG, SPK and z’ev to an atmospheric, psychedelic and quite ambient version of noise) on small labels in Italy, Portugal, USA etc. AO was always very closely connected to the Börft Records label, run by the two core members Jan Svensson and Joachim Nordwall. Börft was a label for weird electronic experiments, noise and industrial. In 1994, Nordwall left the label and Sweden (to return to the country forming the iDEAL Organisation but never to Börft and the south-east) and Svensson continued by focusing on bent acid house and dance stuff. The psychedelic aspect of the music came in though an early interest in natural drugs and the need to investigate different ways of messing with the mind. For years, AO remained silent with a few short exceptions, but in April 2005, Nordwall and Svensson recorded the 'Interference' album for Ash International. Coloured by Svensson's increasing paranoia sickness and the tension between the two that have been there since their youth, they put down the aspects of the mysteries of psychic broadcasting and manipulation on tape. Long sessions during the years in the mainly analogue Studio Styrka in Johannishus built up a huge archive of recordings, most unreleased to date but slowly being brought to light by labels like Kning Disk, RRR and White Tapes." ![]() ASPECTS OF PHYSICS - SYSTEMS OF SOCIAL RECALIBRATION CD (monotonstudio) "So while AOP's predecessor Physics brought the worlds of indie/punk rock and electronic music together five years before it was even hip to do so (ala Tortoise, Mogwai, and Radiohead), Aspects of Physics takes it one step further with their seamless welding of the styles of post-rock, ambient, IDM, visuals. And lest we forget the punk rock influence, does so with a general dissent towards power structures and non-dynamic systems. Systems of Social Recalibration is more than a CD - it's a philosophy. The beautiful 12-page full color booklet diagrams these thoughts in accordance with the ideas set forth by AOP's music. In a scene so bent on being "cutting edge" and "groundbreaking", often the original underlying ideas become masked, but Aspects of Physics has something meaningful to say. Every click, every sweep of the DSP plugin console, every amplitude and every frequency serves a purpose, from the spooky ambient intro of "Pulse Width" to the epic progression of the 17-minute long "Level 4.2." Expect the post-rockers to shout with glee at the minimal guitar stylings of "Reson", while the IDM geekboys will ponder whether the C64 Sid samples used in "s.id" are vintage C64 or a modern emulator. In the end, however, what matters most is that you have a cohesive package of music and mind, and beyond all, a refreshing break from the monotony of an often faceless and voiceless genre." Sporadic gigs, often with fucking years in between them, left more than one trainspotter wondering if the band existed at all. This LP lays the whispers and rumors to rest once and for all. Totally crushing modern psych splatter, referencing the Theater of Eternal Music one minute and Oblivians the next. That which is Below is like that which is Above and that which is Above is like that which is Below to do the miracles of the Only Thing. And as all things have been and arose from One by the mediation of One, so all things have their birth from this One Thing by adaptation. The Sun is its father; the Moon its mother; the Wind hath carried it in its belly; the Earth is its nurse. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here. Its force or power is entire if it be converted into Earth. Separate the Earth from the Fire, the subtle from the gross, sweetly with great industry. It ascends from the Earth to the Heavens and again it descends to the Earth and receives the force of things superior and inferior. By this means you shall have the glory of the whole world and thereby all obscurity shall fly from you. Its force is above all force, for it vanquishes every subtle thing and penetrates every solid thing. So was the world created. From this are and do come admirable adaptations, whereof the process is here in this. Hence am I called Hermes Trismegistus, having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world. That which I have said of the operation of the Sun is accomplished and ended. -The Emerald Tablet (Isaac Newton, trans.) ![]() BADGERLORE - STORIES FOR OLWS LP (yik yak) "The second full-length release from psychedelic bread bakers and bird whisperers Badgerlore - represented on this release by beard-core ambassadors Ben Chasny (Six Organs Of Admittance, Comets On Fire), Tom Carter (Charalambides), Pete Swanson (Yellow Swans), and Rob Fisk (7 Year Rabbit Cycle, ex-Deerhoof)-- Stories For Owls features six beautifully lush, organic pieces that rise and fall with the group's broke-down, burned-up improv and the interplay of piano, vocals, and dual guitars. The music is organized around the conceptual theme of birds constructing nests, and each track explores this idea differently. Stories For Owls also showcases the talents of two newcomers; Tom Carter, whose playing seems beamed in from some entirely off-kilter universe; and Pete Swanson, who by grabbing and processing live sound, both in real time and through tape-delay, gives the already rickety skeletons of these songs an even greater fragility and tenderness. Beautiful and devastating. Limited Edition." (120kr/€12.50)

Dude is a WILD percussionist who's collaborated with tons of folks, but most recently in a group BULBS... I'm not even sure how to describe this release. I suppose "freedom techno," a ficticious genre imagined by Roope Eronen, would be some sort of applicable term. William weavs all sorts of percussive sounds; bells, electronic drum pads, synth and acoustic drums into a complex whirl of pulses and clicks that will occasionally congeal into abstract loops, minimalist techno riffs, dub-zones or some sort of cohearance, before whatever beat he's imagined crashes in on itself... Those familiar with William's solo track on the Axolotl CDR, "Oranur," will have some idea what to expect... but then, I've been listening to this thing for months and I still don't know what's happening when I listen to this thing. ![]() BASS TONE TRAP - TRAPPING CD (music a la coque) "Re-release of 1983 album LP. This english band is a mish mash of freeform jazz, jagged white funk, empty spaces, great to tangle to! Bass Tone Trap was formed in 1981 when Paul Shaft and Martin Archer's previous group, the ethno-Stockhausen inspired "de tian", possibly Sheffield's unlikliest ever group, co-opted additional recruits Carver, Jasnoch and Infanti from the Sheffield Free Music Group. After an initial period with synthesizer player Ian Clarricoates, the group was completed by the addition of vituoso free jazz / RnB sax man Derek Saw. Given their respective backgrounds one might have been expecting the new group to be more interested in amplified egg slicers than in the riotous jazz-punk pell-mell which quickly became the group's trademark sound. But as listeners as well as players all the group were equally interested in pop as well as experimental musics, and saw a role model / middle ground in, especially, the electric band music of Ornette Coleman. The result was a more or less equal mix of Prime Time, Art Ensemble of Chicago, free improv and white boy funk - not so unusual when you look at the corresponding "No-wave" scene in New York at the same time, or Don Was' Ze label experiments." Extremely well done and as inventive as always. Vinyl LP version of The Bear Quartet's latest album, an idiosyncratic synth-driven noise-pop opus. An album of spiteful popsongs, distortion-swaddled rock, drizzling guitar-hymnals, padded with instrumental, experimental, ambient passages. Equally threatening and beseeching, there are definitely more questions here than answers. Why is it essential? BECAUSE IT'S THE BEAR QUARTET! Maybe this is a blurry snapshot of what it was like to be The Bear Quartet that year. Maybe that long Arctic winter brought them to their artistic knees. Maybe you need this beleaguered, monochromatic, slice of life to appreciate what’s come before and what’s coming up from this amazing band. Essential because there is of course a stricken beauty here, if you’re up to the challenge." (100kr/€10.50)
![]() BELLE EPOQUE - A LA DERIVE LP (forever escaping boredom) "Originally released in Europe, Belle Epoque's debut full-length is finally available in the states. BELLE EPOQUE delivers screaming emocore in the vein of old French emo punk bands (Ivich, Finger Print, Jasmine...) and mid-90's emo bands on Ebullition. You won't be ashamed of what they have to present to you: sincere and intense screamo with passionate lyrics sung in French. Limited to 300 with 100 on gold/white swirl vinyl." MP3 (95kr/€10)
![]() BELLMER DOLLS - THE BIG CATS... 12" (hungry eye) "They take their name from the dolls of Hans Bellmer, the German artist whose highly charged work characterized Europe's interwar period and foreshadowed the impending cataclysm of World War II. There is definitely something of the reckless abandon of the cabaret in New York City's Bellmer Dolls, as well as the cruel probing of the surrealist, making the Weimar-era artist an appropriate point of reference for them. The juxtaposition of the dark and the sensual in their own work is expressed through pounding beat cut by bursts of feedback that sears like an exposed nerve. These Dolls boast a highly impressive CV of ex- Love Life (whose other alumni formed the celebrated Celebration), Universal Order of Armageddon, and Vanity Set members and Jim Sclavunous (known for his work in Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, the Cramps, Sonic Youth, and 8 Eyed Spy) is at the helm as producer, so it is not terribly surprising how cruelly effective they are." ![]() BEN REYNOLDS - MUSIC IS THE MUSIC LANGUAGE CD (ikuisuus) "In the Spring months of 2005 Ben Reynolds began taking yet more jabs from mankind’s collective unconscious and turning them into sounds that love being in your ears. They have since been collected under the title ‘Music Is The Music Language’ and kindly unleashed by new Finnish label Ikuisuus. This is the first CD release from Ben after a torrent of CDRs bearing his name came flowing from various corners of the globe throughout 2004/2005. The sounds contained within the present release were moulded with less care but an equal if not greater amount of love as previous creations; The age old fight between the human controlling impulse and the natural (non) laws of chance ceased momentarily and a brief collaboration between the usually warring factions ensued. The results were welcomed by the overseer of this collaboration as a job well done and has since continued to pursue methods of creation whereby this fight will be done with once and for all. As for how all this sounds, that’s for your ears to decide." (100kr/€10.50)

![]() BLACK ELK CD (crucial blast) "The eponymous debut from Portland, Oregon's BLACK ELK is a raging destructo rock eruption, heavy, catchy, and flattening. This ten song album contains a creeped out conglom of carnivorous charred hardcore punk, the sludgy power of primo Pacific Northwest tarpit rawk (think KARP, MELVINS, and early SOUNDGARDEN as reference points), twitchy Midwestern noise rage somewhere between Am Rep Records (circa-1991) and a more rabid DIE KREUZEN, and a goatheaded psychedelic backwoods black mass/dance party risen to a freakin' fever pitch. Total crush. Produced by Mike Lastra at Smegma Studios (EARTH, THRONES, JACKIE O MOTHERFUCKER)." MP3 (90kr/€9.50)
![]() BLACK ICE - TERRIBLE BIRDS CD (hungry eye) "What started as an experimental side project to Bay Area stalwarts Phantom Limbs to compose haunting instrumental sound-scapes soon evolved to a full band of its own. Numerous compilation appearances (including Cochon Records’ “Nostalgia Del Buio” compiled by Vanishing’s Jesse Eva and Billy Bates as well as Manuel Cochon, and GSL Records’ “Golden Grouper”) and an EP on Atakra Records landed their unnerving din instant acclaim in multiple continents. The throbbing rhythms and jagged melodies of this debut album are both atmospheric and edgy enough, and pensive and razorsharp enough to appeal to enthusiastcs of indie, post-punk, and deathrock fans alike." ![]() BLACK TO COMM - RÜCKWÄRTS BACKWARDS LP (dekorder) "Black To Comm is an alias for Dekorder label owner Marc Richter's audio excursions. "Rückwärts Backwards" is his debut full-length album recorded between 2003 and 2005 in his adopted hometown Hamburg and his childhood home in the Black Forest located in the south of Germany. With a background in many musical styles (from Psychedelia to pure Computer Music) BTC's music is never easy to pin down. This album is essentially created from scratchy shellac and vinyl loops merged with ambience field recordings (with some voice manipulations and kitchen gamelan thrown in for good measure). The warm hiss of analogue recording techniques combined with the apparently antique sounds of vintage organs, acoustic & electric guitars, pianos, glockenspiel and mbira used on these tracks generate a kind of hyperreal, fake nostalgia playing with one's perception of a pseudo-recollection. The layering and hypnotic repetition of short loops extracted from old Psychedelia, Free Jazz, Vaudeville and Traditional records reveal a haunting melodic quality sometimes not distinguishable within the original source material, evoking a hovering feeling of bittersweet melancholy with an omnipresent, slightly disturbing atmosphere hidden beneath the surface. The 8 songs constantly sway back and forth between simple, almost naive arrangements and dense surreal drones with rare, yet intense distorted climaxes making this album one constantly absorbing listening experience." ![]() BLAME GAME - HONEY AND SALT CD (stickfigure) "Beautiful and nauseating, jazzy and fierce, tumultuous and contained, precise and loose... one of these adjectives could be applied at any given point during one of Blame Game's sets. Atlanta's Blame Game is a band of extremes that somehow always makes sense. For those in the audience, the meticulous attention to detail displayed by the band's compositions (while retaining a strong attachment to playing loose when needed) is apparent from the get go. Anchored by the rhythm section of Alex Lambert on drums/sax (also a member of free jazz trio Lie and Swell) and Chris Ware on bass, the band defies nausea-inducing easy labels by giving the listener a quick ride through their assorted influences. In just one song, faint glimpses of Captain Beefheart, Ornette Coleman, and Don Caballero will appear but that glimpse is quickly washed away as you realize that you are seeing something more substantial than a band with great influences. The mark of a great band is one that takes its influences and refuses regurgitation. Blame Game molds those influences to create something that is new and very refreshing. The churning and weaving of guitarists George Asimakos (ex-Camaro Crotch) and Andrew Wiggins (ex-Left to Rust) leaves very little to be desired. Odd time changes and dynamic shifts are just a few of the tricks that Blame Game has in its hat to leave the audience cheering for more at just about every stop they make." MP3 (90kr/€9.50)
![]() THE BLUE HOUR - EVENSONG CD (perun) "Brian Hodges, like Steve von Till of Neurosis, shows once again that a lot of musicians from the metal scene are sliding little by little towards quality romantic neofolk. Leaving aside his initial band Black Atmosphere for the duration of this solo album, Brian Hodges fits in perfectly with the world that is familiar to him, paying homage to a musical genre he particularly affections. As proved by the Sol Invictus cover, Lex Talonis. Yet it is not a simple copy of the sounds of formations that have belonged for ages to the industrial neofolk scene, but an original and honest work. Superb folk ballads, sweet and bitter, of apparent quietude. It is difficult however, to put a label on the music, with neofolk blood in the veins. The reminiscences are hard to determine, yet it seems that one can hear, with a certain dose of imagination I agree, Martyn Bates of Eyeless In Gaza doing covers of Current 93, Lady Morphia or Lux Interna, or In Gowan Ring playing at making Nick Drake songs sound more cheerful. Many fragile and lunar emotions flow from these melancholic tracks, always on the razor's edge, on the verge of going under at any moment, but that keep a proud and vengeful poise. Fine notes of acoustic guitars mingle with Brian Hodges fragile voice, which carries in them a sensibility laid bare. Along with the tracks, sung with accompanying guitar and tambourine, are inserted a few instrumental pieces, solemn and grave, dark and atmospheric. They add to the album an autumnal hue of a world of ruins and scorched lands. Lost moors where respect inspiring mortuary songs suddenly ring out. "Evensong" is released on the Polish label Perun, a young structure run by Tomek Zrabkowski, who is also the founder of the zine Cold, and whose label is to be followed attentively, in view of the musical and graphic quality of this first production. A very nice album, that leaves aside the trodden path, offering a cure of youth to the folk noir genre, whose undeniable qualities appear clearly with each listen." MP3 (75kr/€8)
![]() THE BLUE HOUR - THE WINDLESS PATH CD (perun) "The Windless Path is a meditation on solitude and memory. It is about finding peace and tranquility in the realm of suspended consciousness-a moment of memory or imagination allowed to exist despite the confines of reality. It is about extant ghosts and spirits that haunt our every moment. For the most part, the songs for The Windless Path were recorded live with guitar and vocals. After which, the Blue Hour sought the collaborative efforts of Isaac Aubrey (the Arid Sea), Gydja, Christoph Gladis (Black Atmosphere), and the inimitable Matt Howden (Sieben) to fill out the songs. The Windless Path marks almost two years of recording and mixing. The album ranges from ambient to neo classical to folk to ethereal. Like Evensong, TheWindless Path has an intimate quality with its subtle acoustic atmospheres and delicate sound collages. This album is a soundtrack for an autumn evening with a fine bottle of wine." ![]() BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY - CURSED SLEEP 12" (drag city) "The title track of this single is smooth, elegant and assured, with every bit of tangled hair in place. Swaggering in vocally with a hitherto unknown quality and with a gang of string players in tow (the long-haired kind!), Bonnie receives harmonies alternately cute, cool and ballsy from one of his (and our) favorite singers, Dawn 'The Faun' McCarthy. Sweet melody abounds, as it should for an advance look into a mind-blowing new album. And the rest -- Eyes flashing, 'The Signifying Wolf' shuffles discordant through a snake-pit of questions, declamations and undulations -- a dance we're all familiar with, so grab a butt-plug and jump on in. The conga line forms to the rear. As always, when it's all through, there's 'God's Small Song' to be sung -- red-eyed and feeling no pain." (95kr/€10)

![]() BRADBURY - INSTANT OBLIVION CD (dual plover) "Yes, now then, good, I’m sure it won’t be long now! Your lost mindlessly in the psychedelic vortex of the highly audiogenic Gary Bradbury. Sydney Australia’s favourite chronically depressed, long term ‘unemployed’, alcoholic, asthmatic, homosexual electronic music pioneer. A man who’s just spent the waking half of the last two years concocting this, his third collection of solo works titled ‘INSTANT OBLIVION’ between copius amounts of drinks and bouts with day time television. An album filled with, as he likes to put it ‘colour and generosity’. But what the hell would he know after listening to it so many times that he can’t even comprehend what he’s done. What he’s done is this! Instead of whacking a bunch of staple samples into some shitty looping machine before waiting for the files to render, he’s engaged his startled imagination over a steaming combination of dead sounds in such a way as to make them seam alive, organic. Electronic music like this can only come from a man with a 1/4 of a century’s experience in this so called new medium. If his previous effort the lauded "RUFFINI CORPUSCLE" was a plumb designed to measure the depths of a luscious aural abyss. This album is the measurement discovered by its predecessors journey delving deep into exquisite musical epiphany. Just say the first thing that pops into your mind?" (60kr/€6.50)

Aside from the obvious, there's an amazing confluence among Spencer Yeh's own sound that he's been striving at for years and between various facets of an underground noise and improv scene that's virtually bursting at the seams. His music fits a number of certain tastes, be it catering to those raised on the tried and true avant garde-ians of yesteryear to the recent emergence of the post-hardcore set ripe for fresh sounds and new, more abstract and virulent noises. With all the attention being paid to left-field musicians at the left and right of America, now might be the time to head towards the heartland, and some of the seeds planted in Cincinnati courtesy of Burning Star Core." Included are three live versions of songs from their second lp – “out of a silent sky” – as well as four songs that were never recorded in a studio but were captured live on either WREK 91.1 FM Atlanta or Clemson, South Carolina radio. Both of the full length records – “deja grateful” and “out of a silent sky” are present on this 2xcd as well as the four 7” tracks, the two tracks from the split 7” with spirit assembly and the five tracks which were available only on compilations until now. Car Vs. Driver were a product of their times – the early 90’s produced a huge outpouring of “emo” bands that were highly influenced by the DC hardcore scene of the 80’s. Car Vs. Powerful and haunting music with the now trademarked rambled vocals. Rai Rai Rai/Outback Songs is a set of longer, moodier songs (the last one clocking in on over 10 minutes!). More desperate and more dynamic with a very strong lyrical content. Overall you get a feeling of this being a different band compared to the earlier releases, older and more pissed off. The scene's since changed of course, but these two bands were/are the kings of old-school Inland Empire radicalism. Quem Quaeritis are no more, sadly, but the trio's jams here show beyond a shadow of a doubt why they fucking ruled. Jesus-bent weird-hop, Laker boat free-jazz, and post-political tent spiritualism mesh into a holy trinity of lunatic Americana. No genres, no rules, spring break freedom turned inside out. Child Pornography have been rocking/annoying west coasters since nearly 9/11, and their game still ain't up. Nine spazzy rants of Suicide-on-pixie-sticks Casio-babble, dumb-wave guitar shred, and helium-keyed stream of consciousness word barf. Enough outsider vibes and confusing nonsense to irritate even the stone-chillest board-short bro. In fancy printed matte jackets with face-collage scribble Erin Allen artwork, on kryptonite green vinyl." (100kr/€10.50)
![]() CHRONIC HEIST - FAKE THIS DREAM CD (tell me that you love me) "2004 was the year that Daniel Fagerström and Gabriel Hermansson who played together in swedish krautrockers Pharadox, decided to shift the helm towards another stream and the launch of Chronic Heist was a fact. Homesewn term »suburban gothic« served as a flagship for their journey. Their intention was to create something with one foot in early brittish progressive rock and the other one somewhere in the emotional darkness of goth. They succeded, though the taint of glamrock came like an unexpected keelhaul. After playing an opening band tour in germany with a bad programmed drummachine, intense hardhitting drummer Mårten Billeskalns showed up out of nowhere. The trio was now complete. The three members who earlier played in and with different constellations, bands like Trapdoor Fucking Exit, Members of Tinnitus, Music 77 and JR Ewing, now seem to have found their outermost positions for their creativity. Despite the fact that Chronic Heist hasnt been around for more than half a year with the recent line-up they still feel like a firm unit that go from strength to strength. The recording of ten songs for a debut album rounds up during May and June. Distorted pianos playing magnificent circusmelodies, wry guitars, queer vocalsarrangements and melodic basslines to be expected. Chronic Heist possess that little extra that makes the music interesting to listen to, a finesse that allows something new to be discovered every time. Try it, or go to see them live and you will also be hooked on their »chronic heist«." MP3 (80kr/€8.50)

This is a rawer and younger City of Caterpillar than appears on their LP but these songs are too good to let go out of print. 3 of these songs do not appear anywhere else. See where it all started. Requiems Der Natur 2002-2004 combines the guitarist's rock stance with Wojan's more electronically inclined leanings. Other hands were invited to leave their mark on the project and the tapes were further treated by the duo before being finally let loose. The pleasing result is a stunning neo-psychedelic experience where the musical spirits of This Heat, Ash Ra Tempel, and The Mahavisnu Orchestra are evoked, celebrated and absorbed inside Uhlhorn and Wojan's shifting cloud formations of sound." review from the wire (100kr/€10.50)

Cobolt's new album goes one step ahead in their personal view of what some might call slowcore, that is, quiet indie rock influenced by bands like Codeine, Seam, Low or Red House painters. Slower than ever, more melancholic and atmospheric, their songs create personal atmospheres that capture the listener from the first note. Songs to listen to on a rainy afternoon at home." Cole writes pop songs in Menlo Park, CA similar to those of the Pacific Northwest dudes. He’s toured with everybody from Seattle and Portland and is a really cool guy, and also totally nice. Sometimes he has a moustache. Sometimes he uses a drum machine. This album features some instrumental help from the brother, but other then that it’s all Cole. So this is their first release. It is 10 songs of loud, chant-filled, HELLA heart-felt hardcore punk all writen, recorded, and sang by kids who live radical. It originally came out in October 2004 in a spray painted/hand-assembled CD jewel case, along with a hand-assembled/photo copied booklet. now the pressed it on red/ white splattered vinyl and packed it in a beautiful gatefold cover. Limited to 500 copies ... and thats what the sputnik mag said - Comadre sounds like Saetia if they didn't take themselves so seriously, with the dancey, sassy stylings of The Blood Brothers. Am I digging the scene points hole bigger and bigger by drawing these comparisons? It'd seem so from this apparent name dropping but Comadre is definitely above that. ![]() CUT CITY CDEP (gold standard labs) "Gothenburg, Sweden trio CUT CITY formed in 2002 around the local Deleted Art label, sort of the Swedish counterpart to U.S. art-punk imprints like Three One G and Tapes Records. Combining the progressive guitar-driven thrust of groups like PERE UBU, JOSEF K and THE SOUND, with elements of newer artists like MOVING UNITS and THE RAPTURE, CUT CITY soon evolved a characteristic sound all their own. Fronted by guitarist/singer Max Hansson, whose immediately-recognizable voice betrays the band's relatively new arrival, CUT CITY are a fresh and contemporary addition to the blossoming "dance-punk" pantheon, reinforced by great songwriting and skilled performances. Songs such as "Statues" and "This Exile Reads Me" recall the best of the initial postpunk surge, reminiscent of great bands like New Zealand's NOCTURNAL PROJECTIONS and the near-to-our-heart ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN. CUT CITY's self-titled CDEP is the band's debut release and a warm-up for a forthcoming full-length album later in 2005." (50kr/€5.50)

![]() DANIEL MENCHE - THE FACE OF VEHEMENCE CD (ground fault) "A much welcomed new release from this American artist who has produced some of the best recordings in the experimental music scene. Although this is a Series II recording, do not assume any of the power that Daniel Menche can marshal has been lost. Quiet at times, strong and full in others, this release constructs its moods with powerful bass pulses, full spectrum harmonic drones and vibrating tones along with the scratching, raspy organic textures that Daniel Menche is famous for. Each piece starts with simple murmurs and textures that build via harmonics, tones, and layering into a progression of sound and force. This is not the kind of album that you can turn on and walk away from. It is a full frequency listening experience. The deeper you delve the more you hear. Menche carefully assembles each of these recordings so that the listener can walk away with as much or as little as they like from each session. From the minimal to the multifaceted, each piece utilizes the same elements (drones, harmonics, bass, textures, electronics) but approach and achieve their goals in completely different ways. Menche gathers these composites and sounds into various end-constructs such as great walls of sounds or drop offs into echoed or bass thrum silence without ever losing control, missing a moment or overwhelming the listener. The changes are constant (sometimes slight), only pausing on occasion to build loops or momentarily settle before continuing the music's progress. Being much closer to October's Larynx and other recent works, he manages to finely balance this new "droney" style with the organic noise of old. In doing so, he has kept the power, passion and precision that has always existed in his recordings, making this CD an excellent listen." (revied by chris goudreau) MP3 (80kr/€8.50)

"Condition" is the culmination of early nineties hip-rolling DC base lines and dynamics, with a smothering of aluminum shearing guitar tones and trumpet and percussion outbursts that have been all but abandoned in this day of regurgitated garage and electro-dance-rock. Daniel Striped Tiger may have taken their cues from the likes of Fugazi and Nation Of Ulysses, but have added an urgency and attitude that is more "from out of the basement" than from the "here todayIgone tomorrow" assembly line." Powerfully mastered by Randy Yau, this release has all the aggressiveness of a Series III release but the small sounds and important silence found throughout forces it into the Series II group. Recorded during one year of emotional turmoil, from pitch black depression to something resembeling happiness, »old Ghosts, New Ghosts, All Ghosts« combine Ekelund's penchant for treated field recordings, monotonous soundscapes and epic drones. This album is a must for anyone in to dark drone music. There are traces back in time as well as a very personal sound on this album, which consists of 19 tracks, divided into two parts, the first one being the darker of the two. Some peices carry titles, others not. They are there to take the album forward, perhaps to tell a story of how it feels to be down and out. To lose hope. To lose love. To be left behind. »Old Ghosts, New Ghosts, All Ghosts« is as beautiful as pain can get. Thomas Ekelund (b. 1977), based in Gothenburg, Sweden does what others fail to do - he gives life to his machines. His sound is very organic and real and should appeal to everyone interested in deep listening, ambient noise, as well as the human psyche. This is ceriously deep." MP3 (95kr/€10)

![]() DEERHOOF - KOALAMAGIC: LIVE CD-R (dual plover) "Possibly titled due to Australian recording locations -- though it's nowhere specified if that's actually the case in the credits -- the live, half-hour-long Koalamagic serves up one long and four short tracks from the group over four years' time. Only bassist/singer Satomi and drummer Greg appears on all tracks, making the disc a sort-of band history as alternate arrangements and lineups came and went. The long cut at the start is actually seven or eight tracks from a 2000 show cut as one combined track without any edits, featuring the turn-of-the-millennium trio lineup of the group finding their own stop-start crumble and crunch metier. Greg is arguably the most prominent member here, his blasting clashes on his kit slipping through tempos and fills just as he pleases without diluting the energy, though guitarist John, who proved a smart recruitment for the group, comes up with great abbreviated riffs and squalls. Satomi herself projects the spirit of a winsome singer crossed with caffeinated genes as she pleases -- the initial shift from high-pitched aggression to sweet calm is downright startling -- but for the most part relies on subtlety even as she and her compatriots fire things up. Meanwhile, the band's dips into classic rock raunch for seconds at a time make for a disorienting experience that's still pretty cool -- it's almost like a Led Zeppelin soundcheck that's meant to sound that way, only with a different singer. The remaining numbers are enjoyable enough dips into Deerhoof's disorienting sound; "Insist," featuring the same lineup as the lead track, is a fairly monstrous slab of post-punk doom gone epic, while the 1996-era medley concluding the disc encapsulates chaos in six minutes flat. Satomi does a nice job rocking the bells at points, to be sure." - all music (50kr/€5.50)

Slithering spool tapes sliding like thin brown snakes under, amongst, and finally overtop and around. They overtake the crumbling corpsed-up organ grinder. He, with his grin full of rot and fingers of stank, is ever so pleased to allow the decayed magnetics to engulf his skeletal frame, it is how his power is attained (maintained). Only when wrapped tightly and over his entire torso and head (a tape mummy!) will he begin to play. Quietly at first, as if from a distance - but he is there, RIGHT THERE GODDAMIT - and then the groan and the moaning howl and the static insects all begin to draw near, an orchestra of loneliness. Can you still feel your legs? As your head is slowly filled with ants, you are posed a question: 'What do you make?' he is asking. 'What do you make... of THESE GRAVES?' DEVILLOCK is Justin Chris Meyers on organ, tapes, and electronics. Justin also runs the record and tape label Tone Filth and has other additional musical projects including Panther Skull. Matthew St. Germain (Freedom From record label) plays bass on the first track of These Graves. Mastered by Pete Swanson (D Yellow Swans). Packaged in a two color cd wallet, coreleased with SNSE." Heavy ruling ensued. John Ryan & Co.’s sprawling Arizona backyard – and mercifully dim living room – played host to the geographical delirium of Michigan feedback, California smoke spirits, and hometown desert circle circuitry. This is a concept record of sorts based on the "Seven Deadly Sins" with a song for each sin. The band recorded two versions of the record, one with lyrics in Swedish and on in English. I have been excited about this band since I first heard them. Check out their LP on Putrid Filth Conspiracy. They are more or less a project band since members live in different cities, so it's rare they play live. But the recorded efforts are sure to leave you pumping your fist in the air." (40kr/€4.50)

![]() ECHO IS YOUR LOVE - HUMANSIZE LP (sabotage) "After eight years, three albums and several tours around Europe, Finland's Echo Is Your Love are back with their finest album. Echo Is Your Love was started in early 1998 in Helsinki by four guys who met and were introduced to each others at the first rehearsals. One of the guitarist´s girlfriend became the singer. The intention was to practice as little as possible and to record almost everything that comes out. After some 7"s and the debut album ("Sheets of Blank Fucking Paper" 2000) the band got bored of droning the same two chords and being compared with Pardo Bond, Dead C and the likes. The band decided to start rocking. With the 2nd album ("8 Hours" 2002) and tours around Europe Echo Is Your Love ended up playing at punk/hardcore shows to almost 100% punk crowds which made the band´s music tighter and more aggressive. On the 3rd album ("Paper Cut Eye" 2004) Echo Is Your Love found its own unique style of mixing hardcore aggressiveness with no-wave guitar madness, post-punk danceability with indie cuteness and pop melodies. “Humansize” is a tight and unique mix of no-wave guitar madness, dreamy indiepop melodies, hardcore aggression and danceable post-punk rhythms. Haunting female vocals, sometimes angry, sometimes heavenly, wash over shards of guitar noise and shuddering drums, like if the girls from the B-52s were invited to sing with the one band that wants to save the world with its noise." In the beginning the starting off as a more traditional screamo band that was in the vain of indian summer, jr ewing, and funeral diner, they played multiple shows around the san francisco bay area with such bands as takaru, under a dying sun, atriata, and heart cross love. These new songs are more heavy – but still w/ a lot of passion – all in all a great split 7“ that goes under the skin and the nice packaging looks great between all your other emo 7inches. This time around El Buzzard take their Melvins/Karp influenced stoner dirge up a notch while managing to praise greats such as Black Sabbath, Leaf Hound, Motorhead, and Led Zeppelin. Solid riffs that challenge you not to play air guitar coupled with lamented doom filth dragged through rivers of cough syrup and oxycontin. The vocals are also more raw then ever before making this El Buzzard's most dense and bloodthirsty offering to date. This is the darkest and most melancholic side of élodie that you’ve ever heard, and the title of the album doesn’t lessen that impression. The album is characterized by thoroughness in the arrangements, as well as in the recording. Listening to it, you’ll find that nothing has been left to chance – not even the pauses between the songs are silent, they are filled with colors and sounds. Together, they unite the songs into a result of perfection. This is a split release with Music is my Girlfriend Recordings and a West Side Fabrication." MP3 (50kr/€5.50)

![]() EMPTY SILOS ECHO WAR - INNER WORKING MECHANICS... CD (rok lok) "'Inner Working Mechanics of a Failed Construct' is more than simply a follow-up recording to the Empty Silos Echo War debut, 'Semantics'. It is quite literally its companion piece, a sister record, with most of the compositions and arrangements completed during the same time period as those on 'Semantics', though they would not appear so on face value. These songs were finally committed live to record six months later, with Phil Douglas of Latterman fame. Explosive rhythms, electrified guitars and voices make up landscapes that are violent and ecstatic, often in the same instant. Many of the same themes as the first record are explored, but while the 'Semantics' LP was recorded largely as an exercise in chance and improvisation, 'Mechanics' had a specific design and intent, straight from its initial conception. The trio retained more of a set structure of instrumental roles as well, all the while pushing to truly know their own limits as players in this highly cinematic work. For these reasons, in an effort to offset the record from its elder sibling, these songs were recorded entirely in the digital domain, but with the same minimal overdubbing as allowed on the last release. The most exciting possible soundtrack for driving and sleeping, if such a thing exists, this shit will make you squirm nervously in your chair and rock restlessly in your sleep. I am really proud of this release and the accomplishments the band has made as being recognized as one of Long Island's finest forty minutes to be spent. I remember falling in love with this album when it was just a short run cd-r release on Children's Revolt for their summer 2004 tour. You Black Emperor with the avant garde expermentialism of Steven Reich to create a sound that is unique to the ever so talented members of this band. Rok Lok's first LP release is a split release effort with The Children's Revolt and The Tone Library Collective. Awesome hand screened covers in variety of different colors. Features veterans of Swans, Toiling Midgets, Timco, Tarnation and more.Enablers hail from San Francisco California. All four members of the band are journeyman artists in their own right. On guitar and behind the mixing board Joe Goldring, has collaborated with Swans, Toiling Midgets, and Doug Scharin of June of '44 under the moniker Out in Worship, as well as with Neurosis' Steve Von Till's solo projects. Kevin Thomson, veteran of Timco and Nice Strong Arm, has been playing and touring for twenty years and with his own projects and has been a writing partner with Goldring for ten of those years collaborating on Morning Champ, Touched by a Janitor, and now Enablers.Yuma Joe Byrnes on drums has lent his unique take on the trapset to Tarnation, Broken Horse and others.Pete Simonelli has been continually writing and publishing his efforts in underground literary journals for years and now brings his poems to the table for Enablers. Backed by what Beth Lisik of the SF Gate calls “possibly the world's best power trio”, Pete's words take on new dimensions. With neither wasted words nor notes, the songs are a rich source of styles and collaborations. Recorded live in the studio, End Note equally stresses the importance of both Simonelli's texts and the band's expressive investigations of tension and release. Enablers' first-rate debut doesn't just raise the bar for verse-infused postpunk - it deftly rewrites the book. Jordan N. Mamone." (90kr/€9.50)

![]() END OF A YEAR - SINCERELY LP (slave union) "Exclusively licensed by Revelation Records. As part of the Albany music scene well known for its hardcore and metal, and veterans of heavy bands themselves, End Of A Year wanted to take it in a different direction. Inspired by the Revolution Summer period of D.C., END OF A YEAR decided that it is possible to be loud and honest while being tuneful. The music became a natural outgrowth of that position - melodic and, at times, pleasant but always gritty and married to a punk sensibility. Every member had spent time in basements and on stages well before End Of A Year and the confidence from those years is evident. Anxious to pit themselves against whomever, the band took shows with everyone from the most punishing metal bands to critically lauded indie rock outfits. End Of A Year will share a stagewith anyone and everyone, driven by the challenge of "difference." The band hopes to expand this groundswell of eccentric shows and gain an even more eclectic fanbase through extensive touring in the Northeast and beyond. Recorded in the legendary Inner Ear Studios - the birthplace of the band’s chief influences - with the equally legendary Don Zientara. Sincerely brings together components familiar and new – lyrical quirks that fit the sound to an eerie amalgam, fused by aggression and melody not often found in such raw music. Smart without being condescending, hardcore but not for the ignorant, Sincerely is too honest to be ignored." MP3 (90kr/€9.50)

![]() EULCID - HOPE: AND SONGS TO SING LP (altin village) "the long lost eulcid album finally sees the light of day! the band issued their stunning debut, 'the wind blew all the fires out' in 2002 and then seemed to disappear. eulcid mastermind Mike Law resurfaced in another amazing band, NEW IDEA SOCIETY. somewhere in between eulcid managed to record 'hope: and songs to sing'. shortly after the band broke up which unfortunately led to the album sitting on the shelves. thankfully, it has finally been released by the fine folks over at EXOTIC FEVER. its a shame this album hasnt seen release until now though cause its a great batch of songs that prove that eulcid was one of the most overlooked and underrated bands of the last few years. 'hope: and songs to sing' has a rather disjointed feel as the songs vary quite a bit. however, it actually adds to the listening experience rather than diminishing it. the first two tracks hit especially hard and remind me why i´ve missed this band. laws vocals echo the higher pitched sound of GUY PICCIOTTO of FUGAZI. 'clip' showcases laws lyrical deftness with the telling chorus, 'when information turns to dollars it is already spent/greed is the conveyor, and fiction is present tense/piling up on our backs is a fear we cant question/we will never notice the lullaby is sung all day'. on tracks like '(i heard it) on the radio' and 'checkbook' you can clearly see the influence of laws more straight-forward songwriting approach in NEW IDEA SOCIETY. the 'instrumental no vocals ... 3' and the acoustic 'word of mouth' continue the diverse songwriting to spectacular results. the epic 'cost of profit (untitled)' shows how brilliant this band was. its lyrical daggers shoot right to the heart of the consumerism that overwhelms our society at times. its a theme that seems to be prevalent throughout 'hope: and songs to sing'. ultimately this record and what eulcid meant can be summed up in the lyrics that law puts forth so eloquently time and time again. on 'afterthought' law sings 'no need for volume when the genuine sings/voices knock over un-moveable things'. and on the album closer big heart (for woodie guthrie, for walt cordell), law sings with unwavering passion, 'no one could ever burn my heart out!' call me naive but i sure as hell believe him." Following up to the split-7" with HOLY MOLAR, lately released on the californian label THREE ONE G, the 6 tracks here are totally extreme, full-on blasting Noise-Punk madness, like taking the sound of their previous album "Zoo Psychology" to new heigths and limits! With a full playing- time of 27 minutes!" MP3 (90kr/€9.50)
![]() EXCEPTER - SELF DESTRUCTION CD (fusetron) "Self Destruction was recorded in the winter of 2004 and mixed, edited and reprocessed mostly in the winter of 2005. Self Destruction is the first Excepter record to be feature multi-track recording and overdubbing. Outside of Dan Houglands drum programming and a few vision directives from producer John Fell Ryan, the playing is entirely improvised by the group. Self Destruction is also the first Excepter record to prominently feature the polyphonic synthesizer playing of Nathan Corbin. The husband-wife duo of Caitlin Cook and Calder Martin make the final statement on the album as they take sole vocal duties on the last track, 'Your House.'" (100kr/€10.50)
![]() EXCEPTER - SUNBOMBER 12" (5rc) "Recorded in one hour on a hot afternoon in July 2005, SUNBOMBER captures EXCEPTER fresh from an expedition to the streams and power lines of the Catskill Mountains, and documents the first time the current four-man line-up had played together. Dedicated to the perpetual forward motion of the fixed-gear cyclist, this EP serves as a launching pad into the visionary plane of the modern-day barnstormer." MP3 (90kr/€9.50)
