DUCKTAILS - BACKYARD CD (RTB#48)
Ducktails is Matthew Mondanile from New Jersey and Backyard is an anthology of his first recordings. Raw-sounding and shimmering 3-minute diamonds, longer trance-inducing journeys into heated minds and blurred visions of the Pacific City... This is laidback music for late, late summer nights. Though being remastered to suit the CD format, the roughness from the casssettes are still here. Included here is all the tracks from the II tape, the 1992 demo tape, the split tape with Mudboy, some stuff from the Dreams In Mirror Field session as well as some new cuts. Playtime of close to 74 minutes. Glossy 4-panel digipack.

"There are certain things artists can do to make us at least consider listening to their music. Usually we're sold if they provide a soothing break in the day through some combination of references including: the beach, the sun, outer space, and/or relaxing in a soft chair. Ridgewood, New Jersey's Matthew Mondanile aka Ducktails uses his roots in drone and other weirdo jams as a launching point for his spiraling guitar and ambient keyboard epics about relaxing and vacations. If it were the '80s, Mondanile would be a surf rat who looked like beef jerky, but the musical climate has changed since then. He's actually a 23-year-old who makes music that MySpace categorizes as "Tropical/Psychedelic," which is about as perfect of a description of what he does as any. Download "Beach Point Pleasant" below and check out Mondanile playing as Ducktails on December 10th at Matchless bar in Brooklyn, with a whole bunch of dates around New York and Jersey to follow." - FADER
"Some of what's going on here is reminiscent of Ariel Pink- willfully lo-fi and confusing at times but always remaining in a pop-centric frame of mind. At times I'm also reminded of the mood of more recent Black Dice recording, only without the abstraction. It's hard to describe, but there's a really enjoyable warm mood about all of this, and it's not quite like anything I've heard before. It's a fun listen and a nice diversion from the dronier side of things." - Foxy Digitalis
"Sun jammer extraordinaire Matthew Mondanile glides solo as Ducktails and with a pack of childhood friends in the more song-bound efforts of Real Estate. He’s not from the beach but his songs are about the beach. He told us about his love for the beach, staring out the window and Pacific City." - VICE
